The alliance between farmers and green groups is an interesting one on coal seam gas is an interesting one because it combines very different interests that are not always natural allies.

I am not so sure on the vision argument, although I have argued that way myself. There is a back to the future feel about current debates.

If we just focus on purpose, the reason why, we are told that we need to do things such as improving productivity, but not why beyond limited sets of arguments linked just to economic efficiency or growth. To many, this seems like running very hard just to stand still!Jim Belshawhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/10075614280789984767noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-24338064.post-6911876629391061372012-03-10T18:22:26.421+11:002012-03-10T18:22:26.421+11:00I think the reason we are stuck is that no one is ...I think the reason we are stuck is that no one is articulating a vision of a way forward.

The current debates have reverted to the old tired battle lines and no one is offering an alternative.

Churches and green groups could do this perhaps. The Australia Institute's report into downshifting shows there are huge numbers of people who don't buy the 'money is what it is about' line.

When a Labor government changes a policy due to an advertising campaign by very wealthy people I don't see much hope that the way forward will come from the parties.

If someone can articulate a vision that asks for sacrifices from all (not just the poor) and that is in our long term interest I think they could be very successful.

New alliances can be formed. Eg in today's Fin (Australian Financial Review) there is a report on greenies and farmers getting together to oppose coal seam gas companies.Evanhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/13355215688351759230noreply@blogger.com
