What is less clear is the changing pattern of trade For example, the production and distribution systems are different. IP law is also important.

I would be interested in Winton's comment on your point, 2t. Comparative advantage is often related to relative factor endowments, not about what we do in relation to others. I think you have made an important point here.

Anybody care to address the boundaries, definition question and the way it affects thinking? It might make sense for Australians to support mining (say) because the economic flows are good, but less sense when most of the benefits (employment, revenues etc.) flow straight overseas with 459 visa workers and foreign ownership of companies. A very few Australians (or none at all) get wealthy, the government gets some revenue, but apart from that we might all have been better off favouring agriculture (say) over mining. Or maybe tourism.

Comparative advantage is not about what we do best, it is about what we do better in relation to others, and taking straight commercial advantage of that. For kvd's benefit, yes, that is a fairyland concept.

A small nation state with only 20 million people is already too complex a beast to analyse with a simplistic concept that at its start is based around trade between two people.2 tannersnoreply@blogger.com
