In a funny way, you are my hair shirt and I yours. The point is that each forces the other to consider alternative positions.

Part of the reason why I had so many problems with this post is that I thought that you were entitled to the joy you took.

I may not agree with you on all points, but you have always argued a consistent and intellectually honest line.

I really should have wished you happy sorry day. If Mr Rudd and the rest of us can pull this one off, and I will do my bit, then I do believe that the day will be a major point in Australian history.Jim Belshawhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/10075614280789984767noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-24338064.post-53149440613295263442008-02-14T19:36:00.000+11:002008-02-14T19:36:00.000+11:00But do note the paragraph which follows the two yo...But do note the paragraph which follows the two you quote, Jim, which is why I still welcome your research activities.Anonymousnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-24338064.post-72788906625216018602008-02-13T18:46:00.000+11:002008-02-13T18:46:00.000+11:00Lexcen, I have not been through the detail of the ...Lexcen, I have not been through the detail of the speaches. I suspect that I would agree with David's comment. My complaint lies with the surrounding coverage.

David, like you I accept the co-joined terminology as a descriptor. I also think that my good wife was correct. Yet it is like a horrible itch.

Last night I got into a fight, emotional not physical.I reacted to some TV coverage on the issue, my reaction triggered a counter reaction.

I find that I can handle the issue in an objective way, but there are so many emotional overlays added into coverage and interpretation that I find myself struggling.

At one level this is my personal problem. At a second level, I think that it is a broader problem for the whole country.Jim Belshawhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/10075614280789984767noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-24338064.post-43601621562180672902008-02-13T16:45:00.000+11:002008-02-13T16:45:00.000+11:00JimA few posts ago I queried you about the authent...Jim

A few posts ago I queried you about the authenticity of the terms 'stolen' and 'generation'. While neither word sits easily, I now feel obliged to record my personal acceptance of this co-joined terminology for our past dealings with indigenous Australians.

I think the speech-writers for both Kevin Rudd and Brendan Nelson should be congratulated for producing a flow of words more than acceptable to their masters and their masters' interests.

I found the one uplifting, and the other not so - but that is just me.

I agree completely with your last sentence; I also agree with your good wife.

DavidAnonymousnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-24338064.post-50199279329675074902008-02-13T16:04:00.000+11:002008-02-13T16:04:00.000+11:00Jim, what was in the speech that you considered a ...Jim, what was in the speech that you considered a "distortion of history"?Lexcenhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/17856993035719777231noreply@blogger.com
