I won't comment on India beyond noting that ethnic tensions have been a feature of Indian history.

Any country, India or Australia, is complex mix of attitudes including prejudice on race, religion or ethnicity.

My arguments run at two levels. First, we need to look at the facts of a case. Secondly, if we are talking about history we need to look at the history.

For example, I know of no connection between Australia's changing attitude to race and ethnicity and our convict past beyond mistreatment of the Aborigines by convicts. The connection Indian commentators are making to the convict past is in fact a generalised slur.

It doesn't worry me especially. My interest lies in what it says about people's perceptions of Australia.Jim Belshawhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/10075614280789984767noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-24338064.post-52057065754777570392010-01-06T16:19:33.585+11:002010-01-06T16:19:33.585+11:00I have heard people say we Australians are racist ...I have heard people say we Australians are racist insecure people, maybe because all our forefathers are all convicts. As an Australian living in India for the past 10 years and having never experienced racism, I know this is sadly true and am ashamed to be Australian. This is the truth.Anonymousnoreply@blogger.com
