Back in July last year I wrote a post on the New England Australia blog about the role that inter-state rivalries played in the rise and fall of the paddle steamer along the Murray-Darling River system.
This post has become relevant because people are now referring to history in the context of the current Commonwealth bid for control of the system.
The post indicates clearly the problems that have arisen in the past. Whether these problems justify current moves is a broader question.
